Maria understood the appeal of mainland cities, particularly those near Hong Kong, to young people from Hong Kong. She was aware that the high cost of living and cramped living conditions in Hong Kong can make it difficult for many people to own even a small apartment. However, Maria also recognized that there is a dark side to life in Hong Kong. She knew that families with limited resources often live in extremely cramped quarters, with some having to make do in spaces so small that there isn't even room for a bed. However, in Hong Kong, the wealthy elite can lead opulent lifestyles in palace-like houses on the bay's mountainous slopes or in multi-million-square-foot flats in towering skyscrapers.
