Chapter - 5791

Faced with Jimmy's plea, Matilda was speechless, while Paul felt a pang of sympathy. He turned to Charlie and said, "Mr. Wade, even though my uncle is a bit of a scoundrel, he's still my father's brother. I hope you can give him a chance to change, considering his sincere repentance."

When Paul spoke up to plead with Charlie, Jimmy couldn't understand the situation. He thought to himself, "Paul, my good nephew, if you really want to plead for me, go and ask your stepfather. After all, he's friends with the Rothschild heir. What's the point of asking this young man beside you?"

Intrigued, Charlie asked Paul, "He wants to steal the shares of Smith Law Firm that your parents left for you. Why do you still want to plead for him?"

Paul smiled awkwardly and said, "I know my uncle very well. He came all the way from the United States to cause trouble because he has no legal means to take the shares from my mother and me. Otherwise, with his personality, he would have sued us in the United States a long time ago. What he did today may be underhanded, but fundamentally, he's just desperate and taking a chance. Even if we let him return to the United States safely, he has no other way to claim the shares."

Jimmy didn't expect that his nephew had already seen through his intentions. Feeling ashamed, he said, "Paul, you're right... I was resentful and wanted to cause trouble on this joyous occasion. If you can forgive me this time, I promise I won't bother you again!"

Wiping away his tears, he added with great sorrow, "And I'm already paying the price for my foolish actions. I never imagined that my boss would intentionally set a trap to blackmail me. If he blacklists me, I will lose my job completely. I may never be able to work in the legal profession again. Please spare me, I have a wife and children..."

Seeing his acknowledgment of his mistakes and the suffering he endured, Matilda said to Charlie, "Charlie... let's just forget about it. Considering his genuine repentance, please give Jimmy a chance to start anew."

At this point, Steve couldn't bear the situation and said to Charlie, "Mr. Wade, this despicable scoundrel should be dealt with quickly. Otherwise, he'll forget the pain after a good night's sleep and come back to cause trouble tomorrow. In my opinion, you don't need to bother about him at all. I'll take care of it, and I guarantee you'll never see him again!"

After enduring so much humiliation in Aurous Hill, Steve finally found an outlet for his anger. If he couldn't release it all, he would feel even more frustrated.

Jimmy turned pale with fear. He didn't dare to plead with Steve, but when he saw both Paul and Matilda seeking help from the seemingly ordinary young man in front of him, and even Steve Rothschild treating him with such respect, he suddenly realized that this young man, Charlie Wade, was the real key behind it all.

Jimmy then turned his desperate gaze to Charlie, tears streaming down his face. "Mr. Wade, please, my sister-in-law and nephew don't know me as well. Beg Mr. Rothschild for mercy on my behalf. I promise I will never cause trouble again. If I break my promise, you can send me to jail. I swear it!"

Charlie looked at him, smiled slightly, and said, "Mr. Rothschild mentioned that you don't have to go to jail in the United States. Since there’s no extradition agreement between China and the United States, you can stay here in China safely."

Jimmy, panicking, replied, "I... I came here without a visa. I can only stay in China for 144 hours. If I don't leave within that time, I'll be staying here illegally..."

Charlie reassured him, "Don't worry. I have a good place for you to stay as long as you need."

Steve's face lit up with excitement. "Yes, yes! The dog farm! Don Albert's dog farm is perfect for him. It's even better than prison!"

He gave Charlie a thumbs up. "Mr. Wade, you always come up with the best ideas. This is more satisfying than sending him to jail!"

Jimmy, hearing about the dog farm, was terrified. Although he didn't know the specifics, the name and Steve's excitement made it clear it wasn't a good place. He anxiously asked Charlie, "Mr. Wade... may I ask, what is your dog farm?"

Before Charlie could respond, Steve sneered, "A dog farm raises dogs, of course. But there are real dogs and fake dogs. You, Jimmy, are the latter—one who looks human but acts like a dog."

Steve continued, "Don Albert's dog farm has a great environment. You'll get your own cage and a Japanese maid to serve you meals. You won't have to work hard; just eat and wait for death every day."

The thought of being locked in a dog cage horrified Jimmy. This was a hundred times worse than prison. He cried out, "Mr. Wade, please, I'm begging you. I'm too old to be locked in a dog farm. It would be a waste of your space and food. If I die, you'll have to deal with my body. Please show mercy and let me go!"

Before Charlie could respond, Steve interjected, "It's okay, Mr. Wade. I'll cover all his expenses at the dog farm, and I'll pay double. If he dies, just chop him up and feed him to the dogs. I'll even sponsor the best fighting dog breeders."

Steve waved his hand. "Forget it. I'll simply sponsor Don Albert with $10 million to upgrade his dog farm!"

Jimmy was on the verge of collapse. He never expected Steve to be so relentless. He had hoped to return to the United States and face prison time, but now even that option was gone. If he had known he would end up in a dog cage in China for life, he might have preferred prison.

Matilda and her son, Paul, were also shocked by Steve's ruthless determination to block Jimmy's escape. They wanted to speak up for him but didn't know how to intervene.

Matilda exchanged a glance with Paul and then said politely, "Mr. Rothschild, Jimmy did offend you, but I hope you can forgive him for his sincere remorse. He has three children in the United States, the youngest of whom is not yet an adult. If he disappears in China, his family will be very worried..."

Jimmy, terrified, cried out, "Sister-in-law, stop talking! Please, sister-in-law, stop!"

He knew Steve's intentions. He feared that mentioning his family might prompt Steve to involve them as well.

Steve suddenly clapped his hands. "Yes, yes! We should bring his wife and children over and reunite the family!"

Then he reconsidered. "No, let his family of five live in separate cages, with an empty cage between each. They can see and talk to each other but can't touch. That will be his punishment!"

Jimmy collapsed to the ground. Seeing this, Matilda quickly asked Paul to help him up. She then angrily addressed Steve, "Mr. Rothschild, even if you don't accept his apology, you shouldn't involve his wife and children. There's an old Chinese saying: 'No harm comes to the wife and children.' If word spreads about this, it will tarnish the Rothschild family's reputation."

Steve retorted, "What do Chinese proverbs have to do with me, an American? I just want to make his life miserable. I'll go after his wife, children, and even his family dog if I want to!"

Charlie saw Steve's intense anger and feared he might actually carry out his threats. He intervened, "Alright, Steve, you're here for a wedding. Let's not make this any bloodier."

Steve, momentarily stunned, looked at Charlie and said, "Mr. Wade, he provoked me first. I didn't ask for this!"

Charlie nodded. "I know. But there's no point in leaving him at the dog farm. Instead, we should find something for him to do and extract his remaining value."

Steve quickly agreed. "Fine, let him feed the dogs and clean up the dog poop at the farm every day."

Charlie waved his hands. "He's an experienced lawyer. Cleaning up after dogs is overqualified for him. I just started a company, and our legal department could use someone. How about he works for my new company for ten years, unpaid? If he performs well, he can return home. If not, we can send him to the dog farm later."

Steve understood. "Got it, Mr. Wade."

Charlie turned to Jimmy. "Mr. Smith, I want you to work in China for ten years, with food and housing but no salary. Are you interested? If not, forget I mentioned it."

Jimmy's despair turned to hope. He nodded frantically. "I'm interested! Absolutely!"

For Jimmy, the worst option was the dog farm, and the next worst was returning to his country and going to jail.

Staying and working in China, where he could still enjoy basic personal freedom, was a much better alternative. This was definitely an act of mercy outside the law.

Matilda was surprised that Charlie would ask Jimmy to stay and work for him, but upon reflection, she realized it was a good solution. Although Jimmy could be shameless, this quality was often necessary for an American barrister. Lawyers who specialize in business need thick skin to succeed; the thicker the skin, the higher their professional level and industry status.

Jimmy's position as a senior partner at Ellis Law Firm demonstrated his strong professional abilities. Although he had been working behind the scenes for several years and might be a bit rusty, his extensive front-line experience meant his practical skills were still sharp.

Ultimately, this arrangement was beneficial for Jimmy. It was certainly a better alternative to the dog farm or prison.

Charlie confirmed, "You said you're interested. Do you really mean it?"

Jimmy blurted out, "Yes, absolutely!"

Charlie asked again, "Ten years without regret?"

"No regrets, none at all!"

Charlie continued, "If people ask, do you know what to say?"

"I know! I voluntarily chose to come to China to develop! Even if my wife and children ask, I'll say the same!"

Charlie nodded lightly. "You are a teachable person. If that's the case, I'll let you go back and make arrangements for your family. Report to Matilda in Aurous Hill in half a month."

Jimmy, who hadn't expected Charlie to allow him this opportunity, was extremely grateful. He nodded fervently. "No problem! Thank you, Mr. Wade, for your magnanimity! I'll come over as soon as I've arranged everything at home!"

Charlie looked at Steve. "If he doesn't show up in half a month or tries to run, have him captured and sent to Don Albert's dog farm."

Steve didn't expect to be thwarted in torturing a "loser" like Jimmy. Though slightly depressed, he brushed it off, knowing that pleasing Charlie was more important. He immediately patted his chest and promised, "Don't worry, Mr. Wade, I'll have people keep an eye on him."

Charlie looked at Jimmy and said with a smile, "You are Paul's uncle, and the blood relationship you share won't disappear because of your eldest brother's death. Matilda has been your sister-in-law for decades, and people say a sister-in-law is like a mother. Even though your eldest brother is no longer here, she is still family to you. You've shown great dedication by coming all the way to China for Matilda’s wedding and to help her start her new career. This gesture is truly touching. In my opinion, at the wedding, you should go on stage and say a few words of blessing. Let the guests see your humanity."

Jimmy felt a bitter taste in his mouth but couldn't express it. He understood what Charlie meant. On one hand, it was a way to save face, and on the other, it was necessary to explain to the guests what had happened. Although it was embarrassing, he couldn't dwell on it now. Escaping from Steve Rothschild's clutches was the greatest blessing. Compared to that, a bit of embarrassment was nothing. If it meant avoiding further humiliation, he would gladly endure it.
